I want to make one thing perfectly clear about my amusement at the flooding of DC:

My snide remarks were directed at every single member of Congress, or of the current administration, or whatever yahoo from wherever, who has made some similar remark about the rebuilding of New Orleans, and most especially that snotrag Orrin Hatch.

I have nothing but the utmost sympathy for those who are losing their homes, possessions, and in some cases, their lives. Having been through the same thing, and knowing what they are facing--I feel very sorry for them. FEMA and the insurance companies--better to suffer the plagues of Egypt.

I do wonder, though, why no evangelical (paying attention, Pat Robertson?) has not called attention to the idea that perhaps God is punishing Washington for its sins against the American people?

That's right, Katrina was divine punishment for the sins of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast; this is merely "God moves in mysterious ways." Gotcha.

Last night, I went to an lj community (I was reading, for the first time, docbrite's 'prime liquor" community and it directed me somewhere else, I don't remember where, but it was a New Orleans place) and I have the perfect answer to those nimrods who still insist Katrina, not the flood, destroyed our city.

Um, no, it wasn't Katrina, it was the levee failure and the flood. And apparently the two were NOT related. If you don't believe me, ask any insurance carrier who operated in the greater New Orleans metropolitan area--especially if you were one of their clients. They will be more than happy to explain to you how they were not the same thing.

It is astounding to me, on every level, how so many conservative Republican automatons out there have no capacity for thought or logic (or any understanding of our Constitution or how our government works), and it frightens me more than these brain-dead zombies have the right to vote. There were endless posts on this community about how it was all 'local government' failure; and not the Bush administration's fault; they were being 'scapegoated' and 'blamed' by the 'liberal media' for the failures of our (black) mayor and our (woman) governor. And let's face it, between a black mayor and a woman governor, could the racist anti-feminist conservatives have found a better combination for illogical blame? Now, imagine, just imagine, that the Mayor of New Orleans had been a white Republican man, and the governor of our state, for argument's sake, was a Bush relative--and add to that our votes in the electoral college deemed important for the 2008 election, and ask yourself, how would the aftermath of Katrina have been different?

My personal favorite is some jackass yahoo who posted the now-infamous photograph of the school bus parking lot underwater, as an explanation of how the 'local' government failed. See, they had busses, and could have gotten everyone out of there. My response? "Wow, you're a genius. Why don't you come here and run for mayor? Since you are obviously gifted with psychic powers and KNEW the levee breach and subsequent flood was coming, you should be running our city--and by the way, what are tonight's powerball numbers?"

Asswipe. Why don't you meet me with a copy of that photo in a dark alley sometime? (And make sure your health insurance is paid up before you do.)

One of the things Bill O'Reilly and others of his ilk tell their core audience, over and over again, is that 'liberals think you are stupid'--that whole 'elite' thing which works rather well. Nobody likes to think they are stupid; even if they are. And nobody likes to be condescended to. However, if anything, Katrina and what happened after have shown that the far right wing is just that. Stupid. Illogical. Moronic. Heartless. And ultimately, un-American.

No one in the far right wing ever makes note of the fact that over 90% of the New Orleans metropolitican community DID evacuate, and that the evacuation went incredibly smoothly. Contrast that to the nightmare of evacuating Houston when Rita was coming in, and the evacuation of south Florida when Wilma was on her merry way.

So, if New Orleans should be abandoned and given up for dead, the entire gulf coast, including the entire state of Florida and the Texas coast, should also be abandoned. California west of the San Andreas Fault also needs to be abandoned. Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri should as well because of their chronic tornado problem.

And now, apparently, Washington DC as well.

So, conservative right wing Republicans, what's your answer? Maybe the populations of these areas can be resettled in sparsely populated places like Wyoming and Montana (wait a minute, blizzards!) or New Mexico and Utah.

May God have mercy on your souls--although I tend to think most of you have already sold your soul to Satan.

When I heard that the IRS building was flooded, I did indeed laugh. I think it's amazing that people BLAME homosexuality, drugs, and so forth on mother nature's natural occurances.

One thing that bothers me: What happens to NO when another hurricane hits? Without the levees up and working to the level that they should, I fear the worst and hope for the best. Maybe NO will be without a hurricane this year. Fingers Crossed. I think what most people outside the city don't realize is that NO is a part of the US history. A major part. While I would never wish this on anyone, sometimes it takes it happening to someone else, like Washington, to actually get some kind of understanding of what it's like--they get to wear the shoe on the other foot for a change. maybe this will help out for future reference.

This is very true.

While our fingers are definitely crossed down here for this year's season, I am basing my optimism on history; New Orleans generally takes a direct hit from a major Category 2 or 3 once every fifty years or so.

And what I like to remind those boneheads who live in the red states west of the Mississippi that were not originally a part of Mexico:

Jefferson did not want you. He only wanted New Orleans and offered $3million for it. Your state was thrown in for free.

hahaha good point! Oh and if you and Paul ever need a place to go to you, or even a vaca from NO, my home is always open to you. I think you already know that though. :)

Actually, it's a bit better than that!

"Americans were fearful that they would lose their rights of use to New Orleans. The Jefferson administration decided that the best way to assure long term access to the Mississippi would be to purchase the city of New Orleans and the nearby portions of Louisiana east of the Mississippi. Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert R. Livingston to Paris to negotiate such a purchase. Their interest was only in the port, not in the broad swath of territory eventually included in the Louisiana Purchase which came as a surprise bonus. The American negotiators were prepared to spend $10 MILLION for New Orleans, but were dumbfounded when the entire region was offered for $15 million"

God's wrath
Actually if Pat Robertson did have anything to say about DC getting flooded, he'd still blame the gays. God's pissed that the worthy Senators and Congress critters haven't made being gay punishable by death. Anything less is an abdication of their responsibilities as Christians, right?
